The Dead I Know 9781742373843 Books Reviews

I enjoyed reading The Dead I Know. What I enjoyed most was the character of Aaron Rowe as he takes up a job training to be a funeral director. This fact alone would make an interesting read. However, Aaron's got other issues. He has horrible nightmares and he is a somnambulist who can wake up anywhere and not remember a thing. He also lives in a run down trailer park with Mam who isn't herself anymore and always calls Aaron, David. He has an interesting life for being a teenager and he has a lot of his plate.

The Dead I Know packs a punch and at 200 pages is a swift, engaging read. It was interesting to me to read about the ins and outs of funeral work. Aaron takes to it rather well though it is difficult work and it seems to help keep his mind off other things while at the same time it stirs up deep emotions.

I think this is a very well written, unique book. It's got a lot dark humor and the shining light that comes through is John, the owner of the funeral parlor and his family. John takes Aaron under his wing and tries to teach him the business. John's wife and daughter take to Aaron and his days are quite happily spent with them at the funeral home, it's the night that is the most haunting for Aaron, and his troubling sleeping habits are a challenge so working at the funeral home turns out to be a sort of bright spot in his life where order and a sense of purpose give him something to look forward to.

If you want something different to read-perhaps unsettling, The Dead I Know is a great choice.

Aaron Rowe is constantly tormented by his overly vivid dreams that he has every night. He has the same one every night. Aaron also lives in a trailer with his poor grandma who is slowly losing her mind. Sometimes she even forgets who Aaron is and she will call him David instead. Aaron prefers to keep this information to himself though, so that he won't lose her.

Aaron ends up getting a job with the local funeral director since he isn't that scared of death. He helps pick up the bodies and make them look nice for upcoming funerals. Aaron also goes to all of the funerals and helps out. His boss is John, who is a very kind man who is always looking out for Aaron and has his best interests in mind. John lives with his wife who is always making them little sandwiches for lunch, as well as his daughter, Skye who has taken an interest in Aaron and seems to always put a smile on his face.

I greatly enjoyed this novel. I have never known much about funeral homes and their directors and what went into preparing for a funeral, so this book really educated me on that topic. I felt so bad for Aaron the entire time because of the horrid dreams that he had every night, and it took me a while to piece together what it all meant, but right at the end it suddenly all clicked. Aaron was such a good guy and I couldn't believe what he was going through. It was much darker than I had ever expected.

On the other hand, this book had some lighter moments too. John was so kind to Aaron and I loved how they became good friends. Aaron was always amazed by how much John did for him and how he took care of him, but it was just so sweet. I also loved Mrs. Barton, John's wife, because she greatly cared for Aaron as well. Skye was such an awesome character. Even though Aaron's life was just so dark, Skye seemed to always bring a smile to his face which made him always look forward to waking up the next day. Their friendship was so innocent and understanding.

I don't know how Aaron held his life together because it seemed so hard, especially trying to keep his Mam sane all the time and caring for her as well as herself. He did so much more than anyone would ever realize. This book was very mysterious and interesting read, and I'd definitely suggest picking it up!
THE DEAD I KNOW by Scot Gardner is an exciting and surprising novel flooded with anticipation and excitement. It is sure to keep any reader on the edge of his or her seat with every turn of a page.

Aaron Rowe is no stranger to death. He is not afraid of it, either. This, however, does not mean that it does not disturb him. His sleep is poisoned with terrifying nightmares and unexplained sleep walking. He wakes every morning in a new location unable to remember anything about the night before. His guardian does not do much to help him. In fact, it seems that Aaron is looking after her more than the other way around.

So when Aaron gets a job at JKB funeral home he welcomes the distraction from his complicated home life even if the job entails facing dead bodies and grieving families every day. But the new job seems to only distract Aaron during the day. While he sleeps, his nightmares only worsen until he can think of nothing else but his self-induced terror and his guardian's worsening condition. Haunted by his past and apparent lack of a future, Aaron's sleepwalking reaches a new level. He may have no choice but to assume that he is insane. At least, he would rather do that than face the nightmares themselves. But the nightmares and sleepwalking may have more to do with his past than with his current job or situation. To save his conscious self from his subconscious one, he must first face fears that have followed him for years.

THE DEAD I KNOW is a fantastic novel. There is no simpler way to put it. Gardner does an excellent job of capturing his reader from the first few sentences and does not release his grasp on his audience until the last sentence has been devoured. I love every minute of this haunting, creative, and at times terrifying masterpiece. Gardner's novel is not an action packed thriller in the traditional sense. But he manages to seize his audience through the intense psychological drama and intrigue throughout the entire book. I would recommend this book to older teens with a love of haunting literature that will leave you with a few chilling nightmares yourself.
