Silence for the Dead edition by Simone St James Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
From the opening pages, I was drawn into the atmosphere of Portis House, the mental institution where Silence for the Dead is set. Ms. St. James's skill as a master of fiction is on full display in this book. She weaves a mystery that will keep the reader guessing until the end while maintaining the intense mood you'd expect in a hospital for madmen where things aren't all that they seem. Your heart will be pounding right along with the terrified, unforgettable characters.Tags : Silence for the Dead - Kindle edition by Simone St. James. Silence for the Dead edition by Simone St James Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This was an enjoyable, intelligent ghost story, not full of horror and insanity. However, I was somewhat disappointed because there was no real explanation or closure on why one of the ghosts (the father) stopped his haunting. I still would recommend it as one of the better "ghost" novels that I have read. FYI The author's "The Broken Girls" was not as good. In fact, I couldn't remember that plot until I looked it up; however, I can easily remember the plot to "Silence for the Dead".
Eerie and compelling. The book reminds me of Dennis Lehane's "Shutter Island" and Stephen King's "The Shining" meshed together. It's 1919 and Kitty Weekes is in dire need of a job. She fakes her papers to apply as a nurse at an isolated mental institution for Word War I soldiers. There, she experiences disturbing occurences beyond the walls of Portis House, which used to be an estate of a Swiss family who mysteriously disappeared a few years ago. I love the simple narrative of the book, which lacked the usual "slang" on that period to sound authentic. The eerie atmosphere of the mental institution was also vividly described, making Kitty's experiences chilling and scary. The romance also add spice and life to the story, making the characters more likable and interesting. The story, however, lost its sparkle as soon as it reached the climax, but it still compelled me to finish it.
Post WWI (1919) England is the setting for the three Simone St. James novels that I have read so far, including "Silence for the Dead". The atmosphere is eerie, mysterious, and romantic. Her portrayal of the way many British soldiers came back from WWI with injuries that affected them both physically and mentally - as well as how society in general was still reeling from the losses, gives a historical insight that can be related to any soldier in any war. The ghosts in the stories each have their own stories to tell, of course, and the heroine is drawn into them by her own circumstances. I won't go into the plot, since that has already been done - simply to say that the ghosts are put to rest and the heroine always gets the cute guy. I don't like reading horror stories or unresolved ghost stories, so this book had just the right amount of creepiness and romance for my taste.
This is the third novel by Simone St James that I have read and although they are all different in many ways, there is one common thread you know the man the heroine is going end up with. In this novel Kitty is on the run from something and we don't know what. We get at least two thirds of the way into the novel before we find out what. So, her past is as much mystery as what is going on at Portis House, a "mad house" for PTSD WWI vets. Kitty arrives with faked credentials to Portis House in a remote area of Yorkshire near the sea, and accessable only by a bridge, to claim a post as nurse. She must keep this job since she spent her last penny getting there. But the work is hard, the matron demanding, and living conditions wretched. The poor vets who are housed there are treated poorly as well. Matron is particularly hard on Kitty since she knows immediately that Kitty has forged her recommendation. As Kitty gets to know the men she becomes somewhat sympathetic to all but Creed who gives her the creeps. This is what I call a pluck and gumption novel because that is what keeps her there, causes her to start sorting some strange activities among the men and the ghost, and to team up with patient sixteen. No spoiler alerts. Just know that it all comes to a head quite dramatically during an outbreak of dyptheria and a major storm. If there were a 3.5 rating that's what I would really give it.
There were times while reading this book I had to put it down, close my eyes, and tell myself "No one is watching you" That's the feeling you get while reading this. Chills, suspense, intrigue! Awesome!
1919, England. When Kitty Weekes runs from her abusive life at home with her dad, working in factories, making up aliases and barely getting by, she runs into an all together different kind of trouble. She fakes being a nurse to get hired at Portis House, a mental hospital for men who had shell shock from the war. Amongst the madness of the patients and the meanness of the staff, Kitty starts to go a little mad herself until she recruits the help of "England's Hero" Jack Yates, a patient at Portis House. What they find, and when ensues is pure terror, for everyone involved. A mystery must be solved as to the previous family who owned Portis House, they've up and disappeared. There are moans, voices, screams in the night, and a chilling terrifying apparition.
You'll thoroughly enjoy this book, as well as the rest of Simone St James stories. I highly recommend it!
