Jared Bruin doesn’t know who he is. He remembers nothing of his early childhood before the age of seven when he was abandoned in a park in St. Louis, left in an unfamiliar world that terrified him. He knows only that he is driven to learn everything he can about swordplay and sixteenth-century combat. Almost twenty years later, as he is battling a heroin addiction, suicidal tendencies and a violent affliction he doesn't understand, he is hired to teach swordplay to an enigmatic woman with secrets of her own, who somehow provides a link to his past. Then a missing journal arrives that provides many answers to Jared’s past, and in it another world is revealed, one of a Goddess, prophecies, elves, a devastating love triangle, and a war in desperate need of a hero.

Shadow Fox Ashley J Barnard 9781926681962 Books

I have just read Shadow Fox and I have to say it is the best read I have had for many many years. It gripped me from the moment I started to read. The author has created believable characters who you just fall in love with from the start. I found myself caring deeply for Jared the main character even when he seems to be his own worst enemy. Also the author has done a great job picking up on the differing aspect of both US and UK perceptions. Then to throws us into a completely new world.

The genres of Paranormal Fiction and Fantasy are blended so well that they just flow seamlessly together. This is the first in a series and I for one cannot wait until the next installment finds its way to my Kindle.

Will Evans: I would recommend this book if you are a fan of the likes of Terry Brooks, David Eddings, Janny Wurts or Kelly Armstrong, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Kimm Harris. I believe that Ashley Barnard will be one of the crop of new authors to make an impact on the Paranormal Romance scene.Bookmark

Shadow Fox Ashley J Barnard 9781926681962 Books Reviews

I don't usually write reviews on but this one is special. The book begins an exciting trilogy but stands on its own with a compelling plot and characters. Jared and Tarika are well-drawn, complex people that I invested in quickly. Which is good, because their life is definitely not boring. Sword fights, portals between worlds, intrigue, betrayal, and growing feelings between them had me turning pages so fast I was in danger of breaking my finger. This book reminded me of everything that I love about fantasy but also added strong emotions and a genuine romance that really allowed the story to take off in a way that I'd never seen before. The characters seem real smart sexy funny people who each have a hidden secret and know how to use a sword. The cliff-hanger at the end was frustrating but led me right into the the next book, Fox Rising. This book would be great for someone who likes Urban Fantasy, High Fantasy (There's some of both), Romance, Action, and Suspense. Plus the added bonus is the whole trilogy is a great read.
This is definitely one of those sneakily seductive books that has you losing all track of time until 3AM. Ms. Barnard weaves an intricate tale of mystery and fantasy with characters both flawed and fabulous. Her wordplay paints scenes with raw intensity, whether speeding a motorcyle through the rain or pouring a heart out singing to one's beloved. Jared haunted my thoughts for some time after I finished the book, and I am eager to read the next installment in the series, Fox Rising. Highly recommended for ages 16 and above.
Shadow Fox is the first in a trilogy, so my review is really for the series. Jared Bruin is a sometimes suicidal musician, addict, and weapons master. He has no idea why he's drawn to swordplay, he has no memory of his life before seven years old, and he uses heroin to quell a strange, violent affliction. When he's hired to teach weapons play to a young woman, he begins to discover the secrets of his past and understand his purpose for the future. This is a gritty, violent, dark fantasy, and is really well done. I appreciate that the ending wasn't happy, but it was satisfying, and I read all three books in a week. I'd have given this series 4.5 stars, but I don't know how to do that here!
Jared felt lost in a world he didn't seem to connect with. He was confused, not knowing who he really was, who his family was, or where he came from. He often had dreams or perhaps they were memories he didn't always understand, and painful blackouts that the only solution available to him was to become an addict. Jared was pretty much one of those tortured souls, who made decisions that weren't always in his best interest. But, it was hard to find fault with him. Throughout all that, he had been an inspiring teacher...until he slept with someone he shouldn't have. Oh yeah...he liked his woman. So buh-by job. Then, his supplier wanted the money he felt Jared owed him, which of course he didn't have. Fortunately, an old mentor had told Jared of a job opportunity in America as a Master Swordman. So, naturally, he took it. I really enjoyed Jared's character. Not because he was the hero perse....but, that he had been easy to engage with . He didn't have all the answers, he made mistakes, and he really did try to do the right thing. I loved that he was passionate about his music and his swordsmanship. But most of all, I liked that he was flawed. It was easy to understand his anger and confusions. He never seemed to get a break, and because of that fact, I felt bad for him.

Tarika had been trying to find the best of the best in sword fighting. She pretty much went through everyone, until Jared. She was a kindred spirit to Jared. Both having a past that not only defined them, but will eventually clash with each other. When I first read her character, I was uncertain about her motives. Oh yeah..she had secrets. I even suspected what they were. But by the end of the book, she just flat out pissed me off.

Part of the story's environment felt gritty, harsh, and authentic. Yet, when the character's past and present flowed from current earth to the other world, it was then that the story felt epic and fantastical. I loved the way the author told of Jared's past through a journal. The back story filled in alot of blanks, not to mention, it moved the story forward. The author did an amazing job with the detail and history she put into his father's perspective. It was nice to learn about his past, as Jared did. On the other hand, I didn't care for the deception of Tarika and how her past and her secrets were revealed....but then again, she did pissed me off. I think that should be considered good writing on the authors part, you know.... to pull out such emotion towards a character in a reader.

Overall, Shadow Fox was primarily a dark fantasy, but it did have a paranormal romance twist to it. The action sequences were well done. The plot was not only intriguing, but suspenseful. I couldn't help but wonder, what would happen next. Lastly, the characters are well defined and very compelling. The only thing that really pissed me off...yes, besides Tarika...was the way this book ended. OMG, this author was such a tease. There it was, the story was flowing amazingly smooth, then chomp, cliffhanger. Now, I am going to have to wait anxiously for the next installment, Fox Rising to come out. *sighs* But, I suspect it will be worth it as Shadow Fox was a great beginning to what looks to be a great trilogy
Thoroughly enjoyed this book as it had me glued. The right mix of intrigue and suspense, beautifully stirred with a little bit of magic and fantasy. The two protagonists lives were completely believable as Ashley Barnard carefully detailed their back-story and blended it into the present. There were moments when I felt like jumping into the book to pulverize the 'baddies' and also give the two main characters a wake-up smack on their heads. Great read! I await the sequel, Fox Rising, at the edge of my seat.
