The Lady and the Unicorn A Novel Tracy Chevalier 9780452285453 Books

Tracy Chevalier's latest novel, The Lady and the Unicorn tells the story of a set of tapestries, from the conception of the idea to the display of the finished work. Interwoven with these tapestries emerges the stories of several people, all involved in some way with the story of the Lady and the Unicorn and the tapestries that depict it.
The novel is both well-written and well-told, using the first person narration, while changing narrators back and forth with each chapter. This could have been a clunky method, but Chevalier has made each transition seamless and easy to follow.
Though I won't say this is my favorite Chevalier novel (Girl with a Pearl Earring holds that place) it is a wonderful novel, both in plot and writing. Chevalier continues to write with an easy, reader-friendly style, though I can see subtle changes that speak of a maturing writer. I highly recommend The Lady and the Unicorn, as well as other three novels.

The Lady and the Unicorn A Novel Tracy Chevalier 9780452285453 Books Reviews

Tracy Chevalier is a master of the historical novel. She weaves the story in and out of the lives of her characters. You almost sense that you are there in the room with the tapestry from start to finish. Well worth the time to read.
Like The Girl With the Pearl Earring, Tracy Chevalier has crystallized the era with anecdotal details which makes the story live. I enjoyed this very much.
I have enjoyed most of Tracy Chevalier's historical fiction books starting with The Girl with the Pearl Earring but somehow this one just didn't come together. It was hard to relate to the characters and to the tapestry weaving process.
Intertwining stories of making tapestries during the 15th century told from the lowest maid to the highest lord. Each persons’ telling their tale brought new insights into their lives and places in society all the while following a variety of love stories.
This book is a must read for any lover of medieval life. Chevalier is a master of description and brings the Unicorn Tapestries to life, as if the reader is sitting at the loom, watching Philippe's cartoons unfold from Nicholas' painting to Georges' tapestries. The reader can feel and smell the wool as it is woven, see and smell the millefiori woven in the background, each flower representing an integral part of medieval life, hear the haggling that goes on between client and weaver and become caught in the tension as deadlines come sooner than expected and money becomes scarcer.

From Nicholas' peccadillos to his realization that women are more than sexual objects, to the surprising ending of the novel, each character is essential to the story, and each character grows in his or her own way just as the tapestries grow to completion. The research that must have gone on to make this novel the believable story that unfolds is to be applauded. Wonderful book! I couldn't put it down, and now I must wait for the next Chevalier novel.
I greatly enjoyed this technically fictional, but historically plausible, story of creation of The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries. I liked the unusual format of having each chapter present a different character’s viewpoint of the same events. I would have given it 5 but for the technical jargon about weaving in that age. I found that to a bit distracting and I just had to read through some parts. All in all. I really liked it.
The audiobook greatly recommended! Each chapter read by two different readers; a dramatized story is an interpretation from perspective of different heroes of the novel, based on historical sources how the famous Lady and the Unicorn tapestry was made.. Tracy Chevalier, well known author of the "The Girl with the Pearl Earring", here she made sometimes humorous sometimes dramatic story that is quite fun to listen to, on long commutes to work!
I really tried, but with all too many inaccurate historical things, I just couldn't stand it and couldn't finish it. I am so tired of 21st century writers who try to put our lifestyle overtop how things were done in the past. Arranged marriages among the ruling classes were the norm not the exception.
