FINAL DECISION: This old time romantic suspense book is one of my favorites. I love the strong dominant hero who is completely undone by the determined and independent heroine.THE STORY: Rachel Jones, a widow and former investigative reporter, finds a man washed up on her beach. Rachel came home after her job caused the death of her husband. She now runs two souvenir shops and writes. She the stranger washes up on her beach, her instincts tell her to keep it quiet. Instead she cares for him herself. Kell Sabin is the chief of a shadowy group of U.S. agents. An attempt on his life has left him weak and vulnerable and in the Rachel's hands. Danger surrounds the two as they grow closer even as Kell knows that they have no future because he must be alone to do his work.
OPINION: This book was one of the first romantic suspense books I ever read. I loved that this story had suspense but focused on the romance. It is limited because of the length of the novel and its origin as a category romance. The characters are more complex than a normal category romance and the story is exciting and the relationship complicated. Kell is determined to be alone because of the possible pain his life presents, but he cannot hold out against the determined love of a strong woman. I also loved that Rachel loves Kell and so she accepts him totally even if that means that he will leave her. No whining from Rachel even as her life is turned upside down. The book is part of the serious alpha male hero trend in the 1980s but Rachel is no naive innocent. She is strong and a partner.
WORTH MENTIONING: This book was first published as a category romance in the late 1980s.
CONNECTED BOOKS: DIAMOND BAY is the second book in the Rescues series. It has overlapping characters with the first book in the series MIDNIGHT RAINBOW. DIAMOND BAY can be read as a standalone but is more enjoyable as a companion to MIDNIGHT RAINBOW.
STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Diamond Bay Linda Howard 9781551663074 Books Reviews
I could not get into this book. Character development was weak and the story just seemed contrived to me. I normally enjoy her books, but this one is a bust.
This is one of my favorite LH. It is perfect escape romance. I don't like the current trend that focuses on scaring a reader. LH brings emotion and drama by giving life to her characters. The story becomes believable, because the characters believe it is happening. Great classic read.
Excellent!!! The story just flowed so well and the characters were so real. It was read in just a few hours.
Well written and a pleasure to read !!!
For Years LInda Howard has been one of my favorite authors.. I love her suspense... her plot twists and her uncanny way of making you say.. What the heck just happened?..lol... Always a good story teller ... and her books make me feel like I just got off a roller coaster with pink cheeks and big smile... write on Linda!!
I suggest reading the physical book. Don’t buy the audiobook unless they redo it with a different narrator.
AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR
I hated the narrator. Brenda Sweeney sounded like a little old lady prudish retired school teacher. The way she interpreted phrases was soooo off. Normal adult conversation would not sound that way. For example, one guy asks Jane if she will stay at the hospital to watch over the patient. A normal adult answer would be to say “of course” in a matter of fact way. The narrator said it using a high pitched voice - long and drawn out - southern style like it’s so obvious don’t even ask. Another example Kell asks Rachel how she lifted him onto the bed. She said “the vet” meaning the vet helped her. But this narrator said “the vet” in a very high pitched voice and long and drawn out - like it’s obvious, you should know the answer, why are you asking me? I don’t know if I’m explaining this well, but it was ICK. It did not sound normal or natural for 30-year-old adults. The narrator made the hero sound like a school teacher, not the alpha male. Same goes for sex scenes. This little old lady narrator does not fit.
THE STORY
The plot involved CIA type agents and a woman who used to work as an investigative reporter. Feel good ending.
DATA
Narrative mode 3rd person. Story length 244 pages. Swearing language mild. Sexual language moderate. Number of sex scenes eight. Setting current day Gainesville, Florida. Copyright 1987. Genre contemporary romantic suspense.
Diamond Bay remains in the top ten romance stories that I have ever read...Well Sabin is the man...I love heroes who are almost invincible...Rachel Jones is well fleshed and the appearance of Grant and Jane Sullivan makes the story so good. It is hard to explain why I have read this book at least ten times or more...This romance at it's best!
This was one of the first Linda Howard's I'd ever read, as I didn't start at the beginning. I actually read this and All the Queen's Men in the same weekend. I loved this, because it is a love story and that's my passion. But even more importantly, this was one in a series for Linda Howard and I enjoyed them all. If I want a heavy read, I'll pick something that isn't a romance, thank you. But when I want romance, the choice better be between Linda Howard and Sandra Brown.
