Let me start by saying I normally don’t write reviews; in the case of this book I had to make an exception. I have been a fairly devoted follower of this case for some time and have read through all of the police and FBI reports, participated in online forums and chats with amateur experts and some of the original instigators and others directly involved in the case so I consider myself pretty well versed and can usually pick out inaccuracies and common misconceptions about the case. All that being said, when I hear of another Zodiac book coming out my first thought is, “Oh boy, I wonder who is cashing in this time”? Someone claiming their father was the killer with no credible evidence, a sensationalized inaccurate account, etc. This book is the opposite. Very, very well written, based on straightforward facts of the case verified as much as possible by primary sources. This book is THE best introduction to the case along with Tom Voight’s website. It avoids slanting information toward a pet suspect and repeating common inaccuracies. Very well researched, detailed and an accessible read. I highly recommend it. I greatly look forward to volumes 2 and 3.Product details

Hunted The Zodiac Murders Revised Edition The Zodiac Serial Killer Volume 1 Mark Hewitt 9780990857570 Books Reviews
Just the facts, but a lot of them, so it was more informative that any other book I have read on the subject, so far. l learned a lot that I did not know and hope this case can be solved someday. No theories about "who done it" so to speak, so if that appeals to your sensibilities then this is a good book for you. Also, it was respectful of the victims and their families, I felt, compared to other books I have read. Good investigative work! Very humanely done for the nature of the subject matter.
I posted a review on the other book in the series and everything I wrote about Book 2 is even more true here -- the author is very methodical about his research and is careful about his conclusions. And the details about the police procedure is the highlight specifically on this book. Anyone interested in reading about the way local police procedure was done back in the day in the west coast will get everything you need to know. Outstanding writing in a sub-sub-sub genre of true crime writing.
Engrossing, Enthralling. Enlightening. With the skill of a story- teller and the mindset of an investigator, Hewitt unfolds the events and mystery surrounding this figure known as the Zodiac. As a non-US resident and one whose knowledge of the Zodiac was scant at best, I found myself captivated by the whole compilation of the facts that surrounded the crimes, the numerous figures involved in the subsequent investigations, and the very files the author has researched and recorded for our own personal analysis. This book evidences great research and painstaking investigation by the author and yet, wonderfully, he has the gift to formulate it all into a gripping narrative that is clear, concise and compelling. Can’t wait for book two.
for only $5 on , I couldn't resist. I read a sample of the book, and I could tell the author is unbiased, very thorough, and has no axe to grind. so, I bought the book. Love it. I've read most of the Zodiac books in print, and I must say, this book is the most grounded, sensible, thoroughly researched, and unbiased look at the case I"ve read. Hewitt presents facts, drawings, witness interviews (from police records) and countless incidents I hadn't heard about re encounters with Zodiac before the murders. There is much information here, but never too much. It is clear the author set out to find the truth the old-fashioned way by reading the original police reports and interviewing the witnesses. There were many police errors in this case, which caused confusion during the original investigation. Having the benefit of hindsight and the time to focus on this single case, Hewitt has written a solid book, imho. I've just ordered his second book, in which he profiles the killer. I must say I came into this case with some prejudice w regards to suspects, but after reading this book, and looking only at the evidence, I see the case in a whole new light. Also, I have less regard for handwriting analysis as hard evidence. I can't wait for Hewitt's 3rd book to be published.
P.S. I've read Graysmith's, Hodel's, Gary Stewart's, and Lyndon Lafferty's books. I hold this book in highest esteem, followed by Stewart's.
It is my understanding that this is the first in a three book series about Zodiac. I heard an interview with the author on a podcast and now I am really looking forward to the follow ons.
Also, he is one of the first to write a critical review without trying to push his own theory of a particular suspect which is a big plus since his evidence is unvarnished.
This is an excellent factual overview of the Zodiac case. It is well written and very engaging. I learned more about Cheri Jo Bates than I'd learned from any publication to this point. I lived in the SF Bay Area as a boy and I remember the Zodiac well. The atmosphere of fear he created is not easily forgotten. I highly recommend this book. The author makes no effort to solve the case. I think is a wise move since there are so many suspects and the cases against them are all circumstantial. The author pulls together what is known about the case in one very readable volume. Great job!
Mark Hewitt is the chief-editor of the scholarly journal, Radians & Inches, which is dedicated to addressing the hard questions of the Zodiac case without delving into unfounded speculation. He has adopted a similar approach in his book on the Zodiac case. Unlike almost all of the other Zodiac related books, he does not waste the reader’s time with so-called suspects. Instead, what he does – and he does so very well – is to document the facts of the murders, letters, ciphers, and describe the efforts of the investigators to catch the Zodiac. I can recommend the book for those who are new to the case, but certainly also for those who are actively pursuing the footsteps of the Zodiac. Mark is an experienced and powerful writer and has been able to pen a very enthralling book, and not mere a recitation of facts. It is highly recommended.
